Masis Youth Center (MYC) has launched English-language courses at two levels: for beginners, coming to the language for the first time, and for young people, who already have a basic knowledge of English.
The beginners start with a study of English grammar and phonetics, and use learning games to help assimilate what they are taught.
Students in the more advanced group expand their vocabulary, improve their conversation skills by talking to each other in English, and work to improve their listening comprehension. They also watch movies in English, read, hold discussions on various topics and invent and play their own English-language games.
The English club has ambitious plans to increase the number of its students by opening two more groups. Courses in public speaking are planned, as well as a business writing group, where students will learn to write essays, CVs and job application letters in English.
MYC now also has its own literature club, made possible thanks to the new library at the Center. The Club members meet once a week under the guidance of the journalist Alvard Arutyunyan and the Center coordinator, Svetlana Azatyan.
The literature club brings together young people who enjoy reading, gives them the opportunity to share their creativity and familiarizes them with classical literature and literary history as well as modern authors.
The club will have a broad programme, including literary and musical evenings, discussions and meetings with interesting people. There are even plans to open a weekly magazine serving the town of Masis.
